AI training interviews and assessments: what to expect and how to pass
Updated · By the AI Training Pay team · How we research
Every AI training platform screens before it pays. The expert marketplaces use a recorded interview with an AI interviewer; the generalist platforms use written skills tests. Here's how each one works, sourced to the platform's own docs where they exist, and how to prepare.
The two kinds of screen
- AI interviews (Mercor, micro1): a voice conversation with an AI interviewer about your background and your field. It tests depth and how clearly you explain.
- Skills assessments (DataAnnotation, Outlier, Alignerr, Turing): written or coding tasks that look like the real work. It tests whether you follow instructions and judge quality well.
Mercor: AI interview
You apply to a specific listing with your resume, then take an AI interview. Mercor's docs describe it as about 20 minutes of role-specific questions; the AI produces a transcript and evaluates it for the listing. You only do each interview once, and a completed result carries over to other listings that use the same one. You get up to three attempts, and support can grant a one-off retake if a technical problem used them up. Chrome is recommended. If the interviewer goes quiet, Mercor suggests waiting 30 to 60 seconds before assuming it froze.

micro1: AI interview
micro1's AI interviewer runs a live voice interview tailored to the skills you list. Its library says sessions run 20 to 40 minutes, about 7 minutes per skill assessed. Expect camera, microphone and screen sharing on, and a coding exercise for technical roles. You get a result at the end saying whether you met its certification bar. Certification makes you eligible for matching; it doesn't guarantee a project.

DataAnnotation: starter assessment
DataAnnotation screens with a written starter assessment: evaluating chatbot answers and writing your own, with a separate coding assessment for coding tracks. There's no interview and no rejection email. If you pass, projects appear in your dashboard; silence after a few weeks usually means no.

Outlier, Alignerr and Turing: skills tests
Outlier has you complete onboarding and skill assessments before projects show up. Alignerr attaches an assessment to each listing. Turing uses a timed assessment, often a coding test, and some projects require several hours a day of overlap with US Pacific time.
How to prepare for an AI interview
- Re-read your resume. The questions start from it. Be ready to go deep on anything you listed.
- Answer with specifics. Name the method, the tool, the number. "I reduced claim denials 18% by rewriting our prior-auth workflow" beats "I improved processes".
- Keep answers to a minute or two. Mercor's own advice is to be concise. Long, wandering answers transcribe badly.
- Ask it to repeat. Asking the AI to repeat or clarify a question is fine and expected.
- Fix your setup first. Quiet room, wired headphones if you have them, Chrome, a stable connection, camera at eye level.
How to pass a skills assessment
- Read every instruction, twice. Most failures are instruction misses, not knowledge gaps.
- Explain your rating. When you compare two answers, say exactly why one is better: accuracy first, then completeness, then clarity.
- Check facts. Graders look for whether you caught the confident-sounding error.
- Write in your own words. Platforms hire you for human judgment, and many explicitly ban AI tools in assessments and tasks.
- Don't rush. Time limits are usually generous. Quality scores matter far more than speed.
Red flags during "interviews"
A real platform interview happens inside the platform's own site. Interviews over WhatsApp or Telegram, requests to buy equipment, or any fee are signs of a scam using a real platform's name. Check the message before you reply.
Questions people ask
How long is the Mercor AI interview?
Mercor's talent docs say about 20 minutes, though some run shorter or longer. You complete each interview once, and the result carries over to other listings that use the same interview.
Can you retake the Mercor AI interview?
Yes. Mercor's docs allow up to three attempts from your Assessments page. If you run out because of a technical problem, you can ask support for a one-off retake.
How long is the micro1 AI interview?
micro1's library says 20 to 40 minutes, depending on how many skills you're assessed on. Each skill takes about 7 minutes.
How long until DataAnnotation replies after the starter assessment?
DataAnnotation doesn't send rejection emails. Reports from applicants suggest that silence after two or three weeks usually means you weren't accepted.
Can I use ChatGPT during an AI training assessment?
Don't. Platforms pay for human judgment, and many explicitly ban AI tools in assessments and tasks; breaking a project's rules can get you removed.
