Overview
Handshake is seeking experienced Economics PhDs to support AI research through flexible, hourly contract work. This is not a traditional economics research or academic role. Instead, you’ll apply your expertise in economic theory, econometrics, and applied economic analysis to evaluate AI-generated content, provide structured feedback, and help improve how AI understands complex economic questions, markets, institutions, and evidence-based decision-making.
This is an ongoing, project-based opportunity that can be done alongside your primary employment.

- University professors or faculty in Economics or closely related fields

This is not a traditional full-time role. You’ll apply once and, if qualified, be considered for part-time, project-based work as new projects become available.

We’re looking for candidates with:
- A PhD (completed) or advanced PhD candidacy (3rd year or beyond, with coursework completed) in Economics or a closely related field from a reputable institution

- Deep expertise in one or more of the following areas: Microeconomic theory and game theory

- Public economics and welfare analysis
- International trade and finance

- Health, environmental, or urban economics
- Strong analytical and research skills, with experience evaluating complex economic problems formally and rigorously
- Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and follow detailed project guidelines
How Handshake AI pays and hires
Weekly through Stripe. The pay week runs Monday to Sunday (Pacific), Handshake sends payouts by Wednesday afternoon, and funds usually become withdrawable about two days later. Onboarding is paid only when a project's terms say so.
Apply and verify your identity on the Handshake AI site. You're matched to projects by background, invited by email when one fits, and some projects require an assessment first.
