Overview
Handshake is seeking experienced Political Science PhDs to support AI research through flexible, hourly contract work. This is not a traditional political science research or academic role. Instead, you’ll apply your expertise in political institutions, comparative politics, international relations, and political analysis to evaluate AI-generated content, provide structured feedback, and help improve how AI understands complex political questions, governance, and evidence-based reasoning about political behavior and institutions.
This is an ongoing, project-based opportunity that can be done alongside your primary employment.
Who This Is For
This opportunity is designed for professionals with advanced expertise in political science, including those who are:
- University professors or faculty in Political Science, Government, International Relations, or closely related fields
- Postdoctoral researchers in Political Science or closely related fields
- Senior PhD students or candidates (typically ABD or 3rd year and beyond) at reputable institutions
This is not a traditional full-time role. You’ll apply once and, if qualified, be considered for part-time, project-based work as new projects become available.
Qualifications
We’re looking for candidates with:
- A PhD (completed) or advanced PhD candidacy (3rd year or beyond, with coursework completed) in Political Science, Government, International Relations, or a closely related field from a reputable institution
- A record of research output, such as peer-reviewed publications, working papers, or conference presentations
- Deep expertise in one or more of the following areas: American politics and political institutions
- Comparative politics and democratization
- International relations and security studies
- Political economy
- Political theory and philosophy
- Public opinion, political behavior, and elections
- Public law and judicial politics
- Quantitative and qualitative research methods, including causal inference
- Conflict, peace, and international organizations
- Public administration and public policy
- Strong analytical and research skills, with experience evaluating complex political questions formally and rigorously
- Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and follow detailed project guidelines
How Handshake AI pays and hires
Weekly through Stripe. The pay week runs Monday to Sunday (Pacific), Handshake sends payouts by Wednesday afternoon, and funds usually become withdrawable about two days later. Onboarding is paid only when a project's terms say so.
Apply and verify your identity on the Handshake AI site. You're matched to projects by background, invited by email when one fits, and some projects require an assessment first.
