Outlier AI jobs (2026): what Outlier pays, how it works, and alternatives that list pay

By · Updated · How we research

Outlier is Scale AI's platform for AI training contractors. It pays weekly through PayPal or Airtm, and its rates are set per project and country: its own pages advertise up to $28/hr for Swedish writing and up to $150/hr for electrical engineering experts. Outlier doesn't publish its open projects, so this guide checks its advertised rates against the 1,785 live roles we track on five platforms that publish their listings (October 29, 2026).

Outlier's rates, checked against live roles

Outlier advertised ceilings compared with live roles elsewhere
WorkOutlier, up toElsewhere, live
Swedish writing and evaluationOutlier's page$28/hr$58 median, top $1204 roles, small sample
Electrical engineering experts (master's or PhD)Outlier's page$150/hr$83 median, top $12523 roles
  • All 4 live Swedish roles elsewhere list a top rate above Outlier's $28/hr ceiling (a small sample).
  • For electrical engineering, Outlier's $150/hr ceiling is above the best live rate elsewhere ($125/hr), but a ceiling isn't what most people earn: the median live role pays $83/hr.

Outlier figures are the “up to” rates on its own pages, checked October 29, 2026; live figures are the midpoint of each listed hourly range. Methodology

How Outlier works

  • Who runs it: Scale AI, which runs Outlier as its contributor platform. Meta took a minority stake in Scale (reported as 49%) in June 2025.
  • Getting in: create an account, upload your resume and a valid ID, and pass a skill assessment for your area (Outlier).
  • Hours: no minimum. Outlier says most experts work 5 to 10 hours a week and can scale up to 40 (Outlier).
  • Pay: weekly, through PayPal or Airtm (Outlier). You're a 1099 contractor, so nothing is withheld for tax (Outlier); see taxes for AI trainers.
  • Lower-rate time: onboarding and “overtime” phases of a project pay less than core work. “Missions” add about 7.5% on average (Outlier).
  • Where: each rate page names its countries. The electrical engineering page lists Argentina, Australia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, the UK and the US (Outlier).

The Scale AI record

The full list, with sources, is on our Outlier profile. The short version:

  • Six Outlier workers filed a proposed class action in federal court in San Francisco alleging psychological harm from writing prompts about violence and abuse without adequate support. Scale says it offers opt-outs and wellness programs. Allegations. (TechCrunch)
  • The US Department of Labor dropped its Fair Labor Standards Act investigation into Scale AI. No reason was given. (TechCrunch)
  • Meta invested in Scale AI, Outlier's owner, at a valuation above $29 billion and holds a minority stake (Reuters reported 49% for $14.3 billion). Founder Alexandr Wang joined Meta and stayed on Scale's board. (Scale AI announcement)
  • Scale AI agreed to settle California misclassification claims by former contractors (McKinney v. Scale AI, S.F. Superior Court No. CGC-24-620481; reported at $12.5 million). The court gave preliminary approval; the final approval hearing is set for October 30, 2026. The defendants deny violating any law. (Official settlement website)
