Opportunity Overview
Handshake is looking for intensivists to support AI research through flexible, part-time contract work. This is not a traditional job. You’ll draw on your clinical training and hands-on experience in critical care medicine, including respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, resuscitation, and multi-organ support, to evaluate AI-generated content and provide feedback that helps AI reason like a practicing intensivist. The Handshake AI program runs year-round, with project opportunities opening periodically across different areas of expertise.
This is an ongoing, project-based opportunity you can take on alongside your current role.
What You’ll Do
- Use your clinical expertise to create expert-level tasks that today’s top AI models can’t solve, based on real ICU workflows such as rapid assessment of the critically ill, ventilator management, hemodynamic and shock management, sepsis care, point-of-care ultrasound, and treatment planning
- Review and evaluate AI-generated responses for clinical accuracy, patient safety, and alignment with current critical care practice and guidelines
- Provide clear, structured written feedback to help improve AI model performance
- Work remotely and complete tasks at your own pace, with no set schedule or minimum hour requirement
Qualifications
- Degree and clinical training: Completed MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree
- Completed residency training, followed by fellowship training in critical care medicine
- Licensure: Currently licensed to practice medicine in the United States
- Clinical depth: Working knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Medical critical care
- Surgical and trauma critical care
- Neurocritical care
- Cardiac and cardiovascular critical care
- Respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, and ECMO
- Sepsis, shock, and resuscitation
- Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in the ICU
Additional qualifications (not required, but strengthen your application)
- Board certification or board eligibility in critical care medicine, or additional fellowship training in a subspecialty
- Experience at an academic medical center or teaching hospital, peer-reviewed publications, or involvement in clinical research or AI-assisted medical tools
Required for all applicants
- Must have US work authorization
- Strong written communication and attention to detail
- Ability to explain complex critical care concepts clearly
- Ability to work independently in a remote, asynchronous environment
How Handshake AI pays and hires
Weekly through Stripe. The pay week runs Monday to Sunday (Pacific), Handshake sends payouts by Wednesday afternoon, and funds usually become withdrawable about two days later. Onboarding is paid only when a project's terms say so.
Apply and verify your identity on the Handshake AI site. You're matched to projects by background, invited by email when one fits, and some projects require an assessment first.
