Is Remotasks legit?
Scale AI's original task platform for labeling work. Still online, but closed in several countries and pointing some new sign-ups to Outlier.
Our verdict
Real, but be careful
Real, but shrinking. Remotasks is run by Scale AI and has paid workers for years, but it has closed in several countries since 2024 and its terms allow deactivation without notice. If Outlier is open in your country, that's where Scale's newer work goes.
- Run by a real companyScale AI, which set up Remotasks in 2017 for data-labeling work and now runs its generative-AI projects through Outlier.
- Pay process publishedOnly through third parties
- Public listings with payNo, work is behind a login
- Charges workers anythingNo. Real Remotasks work never costs you money
Also known as Scale AI.
Who runs it
Scale AI, which set up Remotasks in 2017 for data-labeling work and now runs its generative-AI projects through Outlier.
How and when it pays
Per its terms, you're paid after completed tasks are verified, to an approved payment method that can receive US dollars. Remotasks doesn't publish a schedule or rates we can cite; treat any rate you see as specific to that task.

How hiring works
Sign up at remotasks.com where it's still open, complete the free training course for a task type, then take tasks. In some countries the sign-up page now directs you to Outlier instead.
What to watch out for
- In 2024 Remotasks shut down entirely in Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan and stopped new sign-ups in Thailand, Vietnam and Poland, often without explanation.
- Its terms let it deactivate accounts immediately, without notice, for any reason (with a final payment for completed tasks).
- Anyone selling a Remotasks account, or charging for 'training', is running a scam.
