Prolific surveys (2026): how much they pay, who gets in, and when you get paid

By · Updated · How we research

Prolific is a research platform where researchers, AI developers and product teams pay people to take part in online studies: questionnaires, decision-making games, product research and AI evaluations. Researchers must pay at least £6 or $8 an hour, and Prolific recommends $12. You cash out to PayPal once you have £6 or $6, and the money arrives within 24 hours. The catches: a waitlist that isn't first come, first served, studies that go to whoever starts first, and Prolific's own warning that it “is not intended to be a full-time job.” Everything here comes from Prolific's help pages, read in full on the date above.

98% of the live AI training roles we track list a midpoint above Prolific's recommended $12/hr. They're different kinds of work: you take Prolific studies one at a time with no application, while AI training roles are applied for and screened like a job.

How much Prolific surveys pay

  • The floor: researchers must pay at least £6 / $8 an hour, and Prolific recommends at least £9 / $12 (source).
  • How the rate is set: each study has a fixed reward and the researcher's estimate of how long it takes; the hourly rate is the reward over that estimate. If people consistently take much longer, the study is flagged as underpaying and Prolific prompts the researcher to make adjustment payments (source).
  • Partial pay: some studies pay a share of the maximum reward based on the time you spent; Prolific's example is 15 minutes of a 60-minute maximum earning 25% of the reward (source).
  • Cash, not points: Prolific says it always pays real money, never gift cards or points (source).

At those rates, $100 means 12.5 hours of studies at the minimum or 8.3 hours at the recommended rate. Whether that many studies are open to you depends on your profile and how fast you start them.

Who can join, and the waitlist

  • Age and place: you must be over 18, and eligibility depends on where you live, not your nationality (source). Prolific is open in 52 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, India, Brazil, Mexico and every EU country; the full list is in the questions below.
  • The waitlist: new sign-ups join a waitlist. Prolific invites people based on demand for their demographics and expertise, so it isn't first come, first served: some get in within hours, others wait months or longer, and support can't tell you your position (source).
  • Once invited: verify your email, phone number and an ID document, complete a practice study, then fill in your “About You” profile, which decides which studies you see (source).

How studies are handed out

  • Studies without screening criteria are first come, first served: anyone in the pool can start as soon as they go live (source).
  • To spread studies fairly, Prolific may send fewer invitations to people who've completed many studies recently (source).
  • Many studies are targeted: researchers filter on your About You answers (age, location, interests and more), and some balance their sample by gender or other demographics (source).
  • Prolific says some studies ask you to evaluate machine learning models and answer questions about AI (source). If that's the work you want, AI training platforms pay for it by the hour: see data annotation jobs and all AI training jobs.

When you get paid

  • Review: researchers have up to 22 days to approve a submission; after that Prolific approves it automatically (source).
  • Cash out: to PayPal, once your combined balance reaches £6 or $6. It arrives within 24 hours, and PayPal handles currency conversion. US residents need a US-based PayPal account (source).
  • New accounts wait longer: until your fourth cash out, or after changing your PayPal details, there's a 72-hour gap between cash outs; after that, once every 24 hours (source).
  • Unpaid outcomes: rejected, returned and timed-out submissions aren't paid. Returns and time-outs don't affect your standing; multiple rejections can. If you're screened out, the researcher should pay you for your time (source).

Why submissions get rejected

Prolific lists these reasons, and says the list isn't complete (source):

  • finishing far faster than expected (being slow doesn't get you rejected; the study times out instead);
  • missing or failing attention checks;
  • very short answers to questions that ask for detail;
  • using AI tools to answer, if the researcher detects it;
  • submitting a study as complete when you hit a technical problem, instead of returning it.

To dispute a rejection, message the researcher first, then use Prolific's support chat (“Dispute a rejection”); Prolific offers mediation if you can't settle it directly (source).

Is it worth it?

As spare-time money, yes: the floor is enforced, payouts are fast, and Prolific is upfront that it isn't a job. Our Prolific profile has the full record. If you want higher rates, AI training platforms hire by the role: the median live role pays $63/hr, and roles that ask for no degree pay a median $30/hr. Questions people ask

Is Prolific legit?

Yes. Prolific is an established research platform (it says it has served AI developers and academics for 10 years) with an enforced $8/hr minimum and PayPal cash outs within 24 hours. Studies fill first come, first served, so treat it as spare-time money.

How much do Prolific surveys pay?

Researchers must pay at least £6 or $8 an hour, and Prolific recommends at least £9 or $12. Each study shows a fixed reward and an estimated time; the hourly rate is that reward divided by the estimate. If people consistently take longer than estimated and a study falls below the minimum, Prolific prompts the researcher to make adjustment payments.

Can you make $100 a day on Prolific?

Only with a lot of available studies. At Prolific's $8 minimum, $100 takes 12.5 hours of studies; at its recommended $12, 8.3 hours. Open studies go to whoever starts first, people who've done many studies recently may get fewer invitations, and Prolific says it "is not intended to be a full-time job."

How long does Prolific take to pay?

Researchers have up to 22 days to review a submission; if they don't, Prolific approves it automatically. Approved money can be cashed out to PayPal once your balance reaches £6 or $6, and it arrives within 24 hours. Until you've cashed out four times, you wait 72 hours between cash outs.

Which countries can use Prolific?

52 countries, based on where you live rather than your nationality: Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States. You must be over 18.

Why am I on the Prolific waitlist?

Prolific invites people off its waitlist based on demand for their demographics and expertise. It isn't first come, first served: some people are invited within hours, others wait months or longer, and support can't tell you your position.

Does Prolific pay for rejected submissions?

No. A rejected submission isn't paid, and multiple rejections can hurt your account. Returned and timed-out submissions aren't paid either, but they don't affect your standing. If you're screened out, the researcher should pay you for the time you spent.
